Description
I am selling a collection of antique chatelaine and jewelry items as seen in the last photo so please see my other offerings and check back!ABOUT:
Old and beautiful double sided Victorian Mourning locket pendant or fob. This is an antique piece that is thicker than your average locket, with larger space between the two sides than a more flat locket. So you could put a photo or a lock of hair, charms or keepsakes inside.
Each side of the cover has an oval stone with a flat top that looks like carnelian from the side, but has a grayish blue layer on the face of it. I read in another listing the they are layered bands of carnelian and onyx and is called sardonyx. It provides a neat color changing affect as it looks grayish in some light, more purple at a different angle, more orange in direct light, etc.
One side has an etched cross applied to the stone. So it is completely reversible and can be worn either way. Beautiful warm antique gold fill color to the metal. Comes on a pretty also antique gold filled chain.
Antique piece dating to the turn of the century that I acquired in France, both are French antique pieces. The French were known for their high quality gold fill methods in the late 1800s early 1900s.
MARKS:
Chain is hallmarked with the Art Nouveau marks similar to FIX pieces for gold fill.
MEASUREMENTS:
It measures about 7/8 inch wide by an inch tall. Chain is about 20 inches.
CONDITION:
The hinge is tight and it opens nicely and remains closed when snapped shut. The stone on the back cover has a few scratches, that you can see only when you study it up close. Not really any deeper scratches though, the wear doesn't run through the lighter color allowing the underlying carnelian to show through at all. The cover has minimal surface wear. There are a few areas of discoloration from age to the gold fill frame on both sides. Some plate loss to the loop. Some surface wear, scuffs, scratches throughout but I don't see any deep dings or dents. The stones are secure in the setting.
But due to age, please note this is not a mint condition item.
Still many years left in this old beauty from an interesting period in history.
I dearly love, collect, use and sell antiques so please check out my other listings and thanks so much for stopping by my shop!
