"World War I made a deep impact on world societies. The borders of many countries were changed, temporarily during the war and for longer terms after the war. These changes resulted in the simultaneous circulation of different currencies in territories that were either temporary occupied by foreign military forces or permanently ceded to other countries. In these territories the authorities in charge frequently carried out systematic nostrification of the banknotes that were put in circulation by foreign countries. The nostrification was frequently made by countermarking banknotes using official handstamps or adhesive paper stamps or their combination. The aim of this book is to present countermarked paper money in the period 1916-1921 that belongs (among others) to the notaphily of Serbia...
This book contains an introduction (Chapter 1), two parts, and appendices. Part I (Chapters 2-6) describes and classifies the handstamps used to countermark the banknotes, while Part II (Chapters 7-17) represents a catalogue of the countermarked banknotes. Appendices contain modest contributions to the notaphilies of other countries of the former Kingdom of SHS, as well as a presentation of banknotes used in Austro-Hungarian camps for prisoners of war from the Kingdom of Serbia and the Kingdom of Montenegro..."
